We seem to have made a rapid transition here in the last month from snow to summer sun. Now when I go out to be with the ponies, I've shed my stocking cap in favor of my sun hat and am reminded of my other summer sun protection strategies. I wear long sleeves, long pants and a broad-brimmed hat whenever the sun is out, but inevitably the back of my neck is exposed to the sun and requires some other form of protection.
I have very sensitive skin, and I'm also aware that chemicals are as readily absorbed through the skin as they are through the lungs or intestines. Therefore, I'm quite particular about what I put on my skin, especially when it is exposed to the sun. I used to use a natural lotion with a Sun Protection Factor of 80, but blocking the sun didn't make sense to me, as I know sunlight is crucial to the body in a variety of ways.
Dynamite Specialty Products makes Tan o' the Isles, a blend of natural oils that softens the skin and enhances the effects of the sun. As Judy Sinner of Dynamite explains, "It is NOT a sun block; it is a sun enhancer, designed to actually prism the sun's rays. Lest you freak about that, remember that the sun is our friend, necessary for the production of vitamin D and stimulation of the pineal gland, bringer of endorphins and mood enhancers."
On our hottest, sunniest days here at 9,000 feet in altitude, I definitely notice when I've forgotten to smooth Tan o' the Isles on my skin. And it's a great moisturizer and massage oil at other times as well.
